The recycling, renewal and intervention in existing buildings, even those that are not at all for conservation, are an important part of the day-to-day work of many architects, including the biggest and most famous of them. It is clear that this topic is appropriate and significant in the field of sustainable architecture: recycling and renovation of buildings is economical in building new infrastructures, economical in demolition, reuse of materials, reduction of pollutants, saving of economic resources and in addition, prevents disruption of existing fabric and in many cases, is an engine for urban renewal.

Before the process of adaptation for reuse, there are many buildings with an abandoned past and history. These buildings, their power and drama are present in them and absent from them at the same time. The experience at this stage of pre-planning, when there is an intention to convert the building in the future, is significant and it can be assumed that it influences the architectural design product. Different architects choose diverse strategies and tactics for intervention. It is interesting to get to know them and study them, as well as other topics related to the operation of adaptation, renewal and recycling.

The main goal of this course is to understand the importance, learn the theoretical background and practice the thinking and work processes in this type of architectural project through the study of architectural precedents and relevant theoretical texts.

The students will be exposed to diverse analysis methods in an effort to build tools and methods for understanding the space of "before and after", including the use of the visualization laboratory in the faculty which will allow them to demonstrate and experience the spaces of the buildings (precedents) "before and after" that have been transformed for reuse.

The teaching method will include lectures, presentation of seminars by the students, group discussions, practice of analysis methods and work in the visualization laboratory. The course is a mandatory affinity course for the thematic studio 'Adaptive Reuse Studio'.
