SOI
Spatial Openness Index
SOI uses 3-dimensional ray casting to quantify the volume of visible space from multiple single viewpoints on a buildings’ façade. The higher the SOI value, the higher the perceived openness and the lower the perceived density

User Guide

Some examples of several groups of dense build compounds, all with the same built volume

They were once ranked by participants in a desk top experiment regarding their perceived density

and once ranked by their measured “spatial openness Index” (the volume of visible space-several years later it was referred by Morelo and Rati as 3D ISOVIST).

In most of the groups The most compact and the most decomposed were perceived as the densest and their SOI was the lowest.
- Visibility was directly correlated with the perceived density
- The experiments reinforced the SOI
